There are outdoor education activities for schools and two Dartmoor Youth Hostels to choose from if you are staying on Dartmoor along with many holiday cottages, Hotels and Bed and Breakfast accommodation scattered throughout and often near to the outdoor activity centres.

Okehampton Farmers’ Market was one of the first to be set up in Devon. Once in the old market hall it now is in Fore Street around St James Chapel Square in the centre of Okehampton, just off the A30 and gateway to North Dartmoor.
Between 10-20 local food and craft producers meet on the 1st and 3rd Saturday of each month, throughout the year.
We have locally produced cheeses, yogurts, eggs, cakes & savoury bakes, preserves including jams, jellies, marmalades, chutneys & pickles, meat & meat products including lamb, pork, beef, rose veal, chicken & duck, handmade pasties & pies, ready cooked meals, herbs and spices, perennial & beddingplants (during the growing season), local timber products for the garden and a fantastic selection of hand crafted soaps.
When you a Dartmoor Cottage, you may decide to do nothing, if it's winter you may just sit back and relax in front of a log fire with a glass of wine, and that’s fine. You venture out from your Dartmoor cottage hideaway and perhaps take a gentle stroll or a great big hike, but if you’d like to venture away from your Cottage or hotel and see a little more of Dartmoor, and the surrounding area, we’ve put together a short list of hand-picked experiences to enhance your stay with us here and drag you out of your Holiday Cottage, B & B Hotel or tent.

Cycling on Dartmoor

Perhaps you plan on bringing your own bike when you visit, in which case you’ll find plenty of opportunities to leave your Dartmoor Cottage and experience Dartmoor by bike. But whether or not you’ve brought your bike, we’d suggest you try the Granite Trail, a mainly traffic-free cycle path largely along a disused railway line with breathtaking views of Dartmoor along the way. Bikes are available to hire for the day from Devon Cycle Hire at Sourton, near Okehampton.

Fernworthy Reservoir is just a short drive from Chagford, it sits just outside Chagford and clearly signposted. Easy parking around the reservoir edge, a flat and easy 3.5 mile walk made more exiting if the overflow is running and more beautiful if the rhododendrons are in flower. Broad leaf and conifer forests, tranquil picnic spots and an abundance of wildlife if you keep a look out.

This is a 2 hour session aimed at small groups of up to 8 people This is a exciting hands on introduction to falconry and birds of prey, based around the variety of birds we have here. You will fly various owls and hawks and along with watching a display and having a large falcon whistling passed your ears at very high speeds. Suitable for all ages this is entirely on site, and fairly static, with plenty of photo opportunities
This is a 4 1/2 hour session for those wanting a fuller introduction to birds of prey. The first half of the session being spent with the owls and the falcons and eagles at our base. This is a wonderful opportunity to get really involved with birds of prey, you'll be working with a variety of different birds at various stages of their training, and will come away with a real insight of how they function, in the wild and in conjunction with us.
The second part will be flying the Harris Hawks amidst the breathtaking scenery of Dartmoor. This is now our most popular offering.
This is The Deluxe session aimed at people who would like a deeper insight into falconry. You will be introduced and explained about the birds we use, and how they work with and respond to us. You will spend the morning handling and flying owls, and learning about the powerful and fast falcons while we put them through their paces.This will be followed by lunch at the Bistro at Bovey Castle, just across the valley from us

Fishing on Dartmoor
Whether you are looking for river, reservoir, fly or coarse fishing there will be somewhere on Dartmoor to cater for your needs. For a start, you can fish the River Teign directly from the hotel’s own riverbank – or you can fish miles of river upstream or downstream by purchasing an Upper Teign Fishing Association permit. Dartmoor is renowned for its sparkling clean rivers, noted for their fishing of wild brown trout, sea trout and salmon. Dartmoors reservoirs also offer very enjoyable fishing, of course there is sea-fishing from Devon’s south coast.

If heritage railways are your thing, you’ll find Dartmoor Railway, based at Okehampton Station, very satisfying. The station alone is worth a visit – faithfully restored, including a welcoming station cafe and model shop. Heritage diesel trains run along the short lengths of track from Okehampton to Meldon Quarry and Sampford Courtney.
For a more immersive experience, the South Devon Railway offers a 30 minute steam train ride along the beautiful Dart Valley from Buckfastleigh to Totnes. At Buckfasteigh Station there is plenty to satisfy the railway enthusiast, including sidings, engine sheds, a model railway, a specialist shop and charming “ride-on” miniature steam railway.
Markets at Tavistock, Dartmoor’s award-winning market town, Dartmoor has no shortage of delightful towns and villages you might like to visit. But we think that Tavistock deserves a special mention. The perfect Devon market town, with a proper bustling community, an award-winning Farmers’ Market, a tranquil park, plenty of independent shops, and good places for bite to eat.
