Description

Church House Inn, a feast of ambience and conviviality

From the moment you enter you feel the friendly atmosphere.  It might be the winter log fires beside the big sofa.  It could be the anticipation of good food.  Probably it’s the lively welcome from the proprietors.  The Inn’s time-honoured background has for centuries invited conversation and conviviality.

The quaintness dates from 1329 when stonemasons built it to house them while they built St Mary’s church alongside.  They needed comfortable accommodation, good food and fine ales.  Today, Church House Inn reputation for good food, selected wines and fine local ales attracts visitors from all over the world.

Walkers on the famous 2 Moors Way recognise Church House Inn as a routine watering hole and regular stop for them.

Uniquely - the only Church House Inn set within Dartmoor

Church House Inn is at the centre of the quaint hamlet of Holne, just 4.5 miles from Ashburton.  Set on the south-eastern slopes of Dartmoor, a community has existed here since the 11th century.  Today a population of around 250 people live in this idyllic setting.

It is the only Church House Inn within the boundary of Dartmoor National Park.  Stonemasons building The Church of St Mary the Virgin, next door, built the Inn in 1329 to provide board and lodgings, plus ales of course  for themselves.  A hollow yew tree in the churchyard, planted around 1300, exists today.

Holne is famous as the birthplace of Charles Kingsley, author of Water Babies and Westward Ho!
During Victorian times the Church House Inn was a popular holiday destination.  The recently discovered visitor’s book, dating from 1800, clearly shows the great pleasure guests enjoyed during their stay.  Today visitors arrive from all parts of the globe.  Such is the fame of this historic Inn.

Visitors come to enjoy the rugged Dartmoor scenery and often to engage in the various leisure pursuits available. The 2 Moors Way footpath stretching across Dartmoor and up to Exmoor passes though Holne. The church House Inn makes a convenient and convivial watering hole.
