Description
LOWER BLACKATON

Lower Blackaton is a 17th century Devon longhouse built of granite, south facing, and set in an acre of informal gardens in the middle of the Dartmoor National Park. It has been refurbished combining tradition with modern comfort, and is fully equipped for up to 12 people in 5 bedrooms. There is ample parking and easy access to the moor.

The farmhouse can either be rented on its own or with a refurbished 45ft barn, making it an ideal informal venue for residential workshops (eg meditation, tai chi, yoga, pilates),  courses, or special events (eg birthday celebrations, informal weddings). It can be set up with tables and chairs, or table tennis, or left as an open space, and has a small kitchen corner with cooker, fridge, sink, crockery, cutlery and glasses.

Widecombe (2 pubs, 2 cafés, village store and PO, church, National Trust shop, gift shops) is 2 miles on foot across Hameldown, or 3 miles by road. Ashburton is 6 miles, Bovey Tracey and Moretonhampstead 10 miles, Newton Abbot and Tavistock 14 miles from (both have supermarkets), and Plymouth and Exeter 25 miles. The nearest train station and coach stop is at Newton Abbot. There are airports at Bristol and Exeter.

The house is equipped with a four-oven Aga, microwave, dish washer, washing machine, tumble dryer, 2 wood burning stoves, central heating, travel cot and two high chairs, TV, DVD, CD, a comprehensive library, piano, chess and other games for all ages, chidrens’ toys and dressing up clothes, WiFi, guest telephone.

The garden of an acre is divided into an informal lower area of shrubs, spring and wild flowers below trees, with a flower and herb garden and a picnic area in the ruins of an older longhouse or shippen, and an spacious upper lawn below the main converted barn and an open fronted barn, with a trampoline in the far top corner.

Dartmoor is on the doorstep, with walks to tors, rivers, woods, high ridges and valleys, and local pubs. Dartmoor’s highest pub, the Warren House Inn, is a two hour walk in one direction, and the Rugglestone and Old Inn in Widecombe are a a steep 40-mimute walk over Hameldown. The Two Moors Way runs along Hameldown, max height 1800ft, to the bronze age village of Grimspound and to Hookney Tor.
