Description A country house with a relaxed and friendly atmosphere within The Dartmoor National Park, an area of outstanding natural beauty. Lydford House has been welcoming guests for over 100 years and was built by the celebrated artist William Widgery (1822-1893). Surrounded by the high Tors, it stands in 8 acres of delightful gardens and pastureland in the historic village of Lydford through which the River Lyd rushes before tumbling through the renowned National Trust gorge with its spectacular White Lady waterfall. Situated close to the Devon/Cornwall border, the high cliffed North Cornish coastline, gentler South Devon coast, Eden Project and many other sites of interest are all less than an hours drive away. There are eleven spacious well-equipped and en-suite bedrooms as well as a charming self-catering apartment, Widgery's Nest, which has excellent aspects over the gardens to the surrounding moors and village beyond. The house is surrounded by extensive gardens and grounds where you can stroll and get to know some of our resident horses, hens, ducks, cats and sheep, or sit on the patio next to the ponds and relax to the sound of the waterfalls while enjoying a cream tea. On cooler evenings have a glass of wine around the log fire in our elegant guest lounge and make friends with our friendly collie, Toby and red setter, Gypsy. Rooms are available at 3pm on the day of arrival and should be vacated at 11am on the day of departure. Well-behaved pets are welcome by prior arrangement (small extra cost), with dog baskets available on request. Situated in Lydford House grounds, the stables offer a holiday for you and your horse. We have 12 good size boxes, a sand school and secure tack rooms. There is ample parking for lorries and trailers. The moors at the top of the lane provide superb hacking with spectacular views from the top of nearby tors. There is also excellent riding in the nearby Lydford Forest and along the many hidden bridleways that traverse the area. Numerous local inns also provide much needed watering holes for both rider and horse alike! If you would like to grab a bite to eat in the saddle, then we can provide packed lunches. Apartment Nestling under the eaves of Lydford House is a cosy comfortable second floor apartment enjoying lovely views of the woodland and the tors beyond. There are two bedrooms, a double and a twin, both with en-suite showers, a lounge/diner with a sofa bed and kitchen. A maximum of five people can be accommodated. Facilities include cooker, microwave, fridge, dishwasher and TVs. You have the full use of the gardens and grounds as well as stables and sand school should you bring your horse. You will be more than welcome to use the hotel facilities for breakfast, as well as enjoying the best of Italian cuisine in La Cascata restaurant. Non smoking, pets welcome.
