Complete beginners and families welcome.

Rides are organised into small groups and tailored to individual experience, whether a total beginner, experienced rider or somewhere in between.
Beginners receive instruction before and during their ride, while the more advanced riders have an assessment lesson in the arena, before leaving the yard. Instruction is always given on request to any rider throughout their ride with us.
Riding boots and up to standard hats are provided.
We do not mix abilities unless a more experienced person is happy to go at the pace of their less experienced friend.
All rides are led by experienced and qualified ride leaders.
Horse riding is a risk sport and there is no getting away from that. Equines are animals and therefore can show unpredictable behaviour at any time. However, here at Shilstone Rocks we do our best to make riding as safe and enjoyable for our customers as we can.
From the information you tell us, when you book, we then organise small groups of similar abilities or it might just be you or you and your friends. For the sake of your safety and your enjoyment, and other riders safety and enjoyment, do not over estimate your riding ability.
What to wear
You are welcome to wear your own riding gear and up to standard headgear. If you do not have any we provide you with up to standard riding hats and riding footwear. If you do not have any jodhpurs, wear tracksuit bottoms, leggings, or a pair of comfy jeans - the less seams the better!
If its hot and sunny wear a short sleeve shirt. We do not recommend riding in tops with no sleeves. And don't forget the suncream - the sun can be stronger than you think.
If its wet we do have a selection of waterproofs available, but if you have your own bring them along.
Be prepared for sunshine, rain, wind, fog, snow, hail. We ride whatever the weather, as long as it is safe to do so.
What better way to enjoy the stunning Dartmoor scenery than from the back of a horse.
From boulder strewn tors, steep hills, rain and mist to the scent of the sun on the heather and gorse, come and experience Dartmoor as it really is and make this a day to remember!
