Description Townend Barn is detached and situated in an acre of grounds around Townend House in the historic Dartmoor village of Lydford.  The barn is situated behind the main house, with ample off road parking. Lydford has no street lighting so after an evening meal at one of the three good restaurants in the village you can wander home under the stars.   Lydford is a thriving working village and an ideal base from which to explore Dartmoor only 15 minutes walk away, at the top of the road. The surrounding area is a beautifully unspoilt part of the moor. No ice cream vans or big buses here, just glorious panoramas - once you walk up behind Widgery Cross you are truly in wilderness. We can lend you maps, guide books and binoculars. A car in Lydford is not an essential; we offer a transfer service from Exeter Station or Exeter Airport. Beautifully converted to a high standard, the oak-floored barn is open plan but intimate, and heated by an efficient wood burning stove and night storage heaters. There is a grand piano which is beautiful to play. It is a calm and comfortable living space, equipped for two or three adults, plus a child or baby.  A cot, high chair and all-terrain buggy are available. The kitchen is well-equipped so that you can cook comfortably.  There is a television with Freeview and DVD player, plus a selection of DVDs. There are two bookcases filled with books for you to enjoy, and a CD player with CDs. There is a double bed in bedroom off the living space with Egyptian cotton bedding, anti-allergen pillows and duvet.  The bedroom has a beamed ceiling and tasteful furnishings. A clock/radio alarm is provided, as is a chest of drawers and garment rail for clothes.  A sofa bed is available in the main living room.  The separate bathroom has a good shower, WC and washbasin.  Towels, bathmat etc. are provided. On arrival a welcome basket will get you started with essentials, but please ask if there is anything you need.  We can order newspapers on request.  Home cooked ready meals are available from Anna's Kitchen and can be pre-ordered for your stay. We should mention, there is no smoking in the barn.   There is no access for wheelchairs, however if you have a disability we would be happy to advise on suitability. We are in the Dartmoor National Park and just 15 minutes walk (2 minutes drive!) from the moor. Bodmin moor is a 30-minute drive. We are just 10 minutes drive from the towns of Tavistock and Okehampton, and the Cathedral city of Exeter is about 45 minutes down the A30. The market town of Launceston and the bright lights of Plymouth are also within easy reach. You can catch a bus to Okehampton or Tavistock (on to Plymouth) in the village.   Lydford has no streetlights so the night sky is visible without a yellow glow; perhaps you could take a night walk on the moor for a totally different, and unforgettable, experience. Dartmoor offers horse riding, cycling and walking. You can also drive to the North Cornwall coast within the hour, for excellent surfing, sandy beaches, rock pools and clifftop walks. In addition there are golf courses, water sports, and fishing locally.
